Event Summary

The Spring Conference of the Committee on Design will take place in Vancouver between May 17 – 19, 2018 The conference hotel is the Pan Pacific located on the scenic waterfront of Vancouver. The welcoming opening reception will take place at the hotel and the former Head of Vancouver Planning will make opening remarks. The reception will be followed by dinner on your own. The schedules for Friday and Saturday include exploration of the central business district including Library Square and Vancouver Public Library by Moshe Safdie Associates and DA Architects+Planners, One Wall Centre by Busby + Associates, the Law Courts designed by Arthur Erickson, the Scotia Dance Center by Stantec/Erickson, and the Vancouver Convention Center West and Harbor Green Park by LMN Architects and DA Architects+Planners. We will also view the under-construction residential building Vancouver Place designed by BIG among other projects.

The tours will also include the University of British Columbia where we will see the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts by Bing Thom Architect, the Liu Institute for Global Issues by Stantec/Erickson, the Belkin Art Gallery by Peter Cardew Architect, the Michael Smith Laboratories by Henriques Partners, and the Beaty Biodiversity Centre, designed by Patkau. Additionally, we will visit the Earth Sciences Building and the Center of Interactive Research and Sustainability both by Perkins +Will. We will have guided tours of the Vancouver Museum of Anthropology designed by Arthur Erickson. We will also visit the Erickson home garden and a private residence designed by Erickson. If time permits or as on your own visits on Sunday, the Langara Student Union building designed by Teeple Architects and the Sunset Community Centre by Bing Thom are projects worth visiting.

The tours will be led by architects familiar with the design aspirations with each building. The conference will also include presentations by planners and architects involved with the developments.

The final evening will include dinner and the member’s slide show, always a great opportunity to see the design efforts of fellow members of the COD. The dinner will take place at the Christ Church Cathedral which has a magnificent interior. The tour arrangements are open to refinement as we near the conference date. Vancouver is a city of great architectural interest and the conference will be rich with great design and information regarding this incredible North American City.
