2012 COD Fall Conference: The Role of Style in Defining Architectural Design Excellence: Seville, Spain
Date: November 11 — 17, 2012
Location:

Event Summary

AIA COD 2012 Fall Conference, in cooperation with AIA Historic Resources Committee.  The Role of Style in Defining Architectural Design Excellence.

Seville Spain is blessed with the results of centuries of fine architecture from both the Western European and Moorish cultures.  It also hosted world’s fairs in 1929 and 1992.  Consequently, it is a city with an exceptionally wide range of examples of architectural stylistic excellence.  It is a great place for us to continue our attempt to tease out the essence of architectural design excellence.  Meanwhile we can spend our down time in one of most humane cities on the planet.  In addition to the typical COD extravagance of building tours, we will have morning presentations from local architects, planners and historians.  To top it all off, we have arranged a riverboat dinner, a visit to Italica and a visit to Casa de Retiro, a timeless residential masterpiece designed by Emilio Ambasz in 1975 (it won a PA Award in 1980).

There are two optional additions to the conference.

One is a two day trip to Cordoba and Granada.  In Granada, we will visit the incomparable Alhambra and the Albaicin, the ancient Moorish quarter.  In Cordoba, we will visit the Grand Mosque and the magnificent Cathedral inside the Mosque.  The Mosque of course is the source of one of the most memorable images of architectural history, the forest of striped horseshoe arches.  Finally, in Cordoba, we will visit the new Museum of Madinat-al-Zahra (architects Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano), a winner of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2010.

The second is a three day trip to Morocco.  This is an opportunity to put your feet on the African continent and experience some of the distinctive urban characteristics Moroccan cities.  Taking the ferry from Gibraltar, we will visit two of the famous blue cities, Tetouan and Chefchouan; and Fez, with its incomparable market; and finally Asilah, a 3500 year old fortified town at the northwest corner tip of the Atlantic coast of Morocco.  We will stay in outstanding hotels with opportunities to enjoy Moroccan cuisine.
