The fifth AIA Taliesin Colloquium:
Taliesin West is sponsored and hosted by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation for
the Historic Resources Committee and the Committee on the Environment of the
American Institute of Architects.
This year’s colloquium will focus on existing buildings as
sixty percent of current work for US firms is on buildings that are already
standing. To meet future resilience and sustainability targets, we need to
upgrade our commitments to re-using this infrastructure. Because the
re-use of existing buildings cuts across all architectural specialties, this
topic is relevant to all practitioners. This raises two questions:
1. What tools do practitioners – especially those who don’t specialize in
historic preservation – need in order to have an informed approach to existing
buildings? And 2. How should architectural education be re-worked to
embrace this new reality? What common ground can be found between
architectural design curricula and preservation curricula that addresses this
growing need, and how do we convince schools that they need to focus on these
It is anticipated that approximately
9 hours of continuing education units will be provided for AIA members who
attend both days, contingent on review and approval of the final program by the
AIA. You will not be eligible to receive credit for them without submitting a
completed registration form and payment.
