2013 CAE Fall Conference: Design Thinking & Creativity

Event Summary

Please join us in San Francisco, California for the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) 2013 Fall Conference from November 6th though November 9th. We will explore ideas of Design Thinking and Creativity as uniquely demonstrated in the San Francisco Bay Area.

We will be looking at examples that include K-12 schools, post-secondary schools, museums and corporate learning environments. Themes of learning though design thinking, environmental responsibility, technology, and making & tinkering will be emphasized. Our dialogue and tours will include thought leaders supporting the conference themes, and educators, allied professionals, architects, and designers speaking to “What the future may soon look like in a Learning Environment near you”.

Continuing Education

Participants may earn up to 18 AIA Continuing Education System (CES) learning units (LUs) for attending the entire conference. A participant will not be eligible to receive credit for LUs unless we have received a completed registration form and payment.

Registration Confirmations

After you register you will receive a registration confirmation via email immediately. If you do not receive a registration confirmation please contact the AIA Registrar or call 800-242-3837. If you fax the registration form, please keep the fax transmittal confirmation for your records.

To ensure you receive the necessary conference materials (registration confirmations, conference updates, advance and final attendee rosters, etc.) please whitelist @aia.org in your email program.

Registration Policy

Registrations postmarked after October 25, 2013 will not be processed in time to be included on the attendee roster. Registration and nametags will be produced on-site.

Cancellation Policy

Refunds, less a $75 cancellation fee, will be made for cancellations received in writing by Friday, October 25, 2013. No cancellation refund is available after October 25. Please fax your cancellation requests to the AIA Registrar or call 800-242-3837.

Hotel Accommodations

A limited block of rooms has been reserved at Sir Francis Drake at 450 Powell Street in San Francisco, CA. Reservations must be received no later than Friday, October 4, 2013 for the group rate; however, the block may sell out prior to the deadline. You are responsible for making your own reservations. To make your reservation, contact the hotel at book online, email the hotel, or call 415-392-7755.  Mention that you are with the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education to receive the group rate of $259 for single/double occupancy plus 16.065% percent state and local taxes.  Or you can secure reservations online.  All reservations must be guaranteed with a credit card when you make your reservation.  The group’s cancellation policy requires cancellations be made 24 hours prior to arrival.  

The Sir Francis Drake Hotel offers free internet in guest rooms if you are signed up for their “InTouch” guest loyalty program. We are asking everyone to please sign up prior to arrival.

Ground Transportation

Taxis are available from the San Francisco International Airport to the Sir Francis Drake.  Taxi rates are estimated at $45-$55 one way and the trip will take approximately 25 minutes.

Parking – If you plan to drive, the Sir Francis Drake has provided directions from a variety of locales. Parking costs at the hotel are $50 for valet and $55 for oversized vehicles not including tax per day.

Force Majeure

The performance of this agreement by either party may be affected by force majeure (including, but not limited to, acts of God, acts of war or other acts of enemies, government  regulation, disaster, strikes, floods, civil disorder, curtailment of transportation facilities, or other emergency or event beyond the control of the parties), thus making it inadvisable, unsafe, illegal, or impossible to provide required accommodations and/or meeting facilities, hold the meeting, or travel to the meeting.  In event of force majeure, either party to this agreement may terminate the agreement upon providing written notice to the other party without penalty or obligation.  Such right of termination shall not be unreasonably exercised.

In addition, the AIA reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel this meeting.  In that event, the AIA shall refund to you all registration fees that it has received from you for this meeting, but shall have no further obligation to you of any type, whether monetary or otherwise.  Accordingly, the AIA shall in no event have any liability to you based on claims for indirect, special or consequential damages of any type whatsoever, and shall have no other obligation to you of any type except as expressly stated in the preceding sentence.
